A Decade at Duketon | Dan Atkins on Friendship and Opportunity

Dan Atkins started at Duketon Operations a decade ago as a Dump Truck Operator, just 18 months after the project began.

When looking back over the past years, Dan recounts that even though the campsite has tripled, with many new pits to mine, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the feeling of family.

“I came to Duketon as my late wife became unwell, and looking back on that time, I had no idea that my colleagues would turn into lifelong friends and family the way they have. It’s a great site, but the people make it,” he said.

At 68, with a career spanning multiple companies, Dan is proof of the opportunities available to those ready for a new challenge.

“I have never felt bored of being a DTO, each swing is different, and the mine environment means the conditions are always changing. When my Superintendent nominated me to be a permanent crew trainer, I was pretty happy.”

When asked what attributes a trainer needs, a modest Dan shared that being respectful, patient and even-tempered are essential.

“I get a real sense of accomplishment being part of someone else’s career journey. You get to know the new employees and how they best learn our advanced safety processes, making sure that you are doing everything you can to help them make their mark.”

After over a decade on-site, Dan never misses a chance to proudly celebrate a previous trainee getting a promotion or diversifying their operator skills.

“You can’t help but feel proud,” he said.

Dan’s advice every day is a learning day, there’s always something to discover if you’re open to it. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling across Asia, reading adventure and crime novels, and having a cold beer with friends.

In the New Year, he looks forward to helping new people thrive in their roles.
